On the 17th of July 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was shot down by a surface-to-air missile in the skies above eastern Ukraine. As the commercial passenger jet disintegrated, fiery debris and personal effects plunged into a sea of sunflowers and agricultural fields, sending plumes of thick smoke into the northern summer sky. 298 people, including 38 people who called Australia home, were on board. None survived. Recovering and identifying victim remains would quickly become an unprecedented operation for the Australian Federal Police and their international counterparts. It would also become a complex mission to find the truth about what happened to MH17, with investigators driven by an unwavering dedication to seek justice for the families left behind. Remarkable first-hand accounts and heart-breaking personal recollections will take you inside the AFP’s wide-reaching and compassionate response to one of the world’s worst aviation tragedies.
